Cheap vs Expensive Lock Upgrades | What Actually Works

The lock upgrade that stops most burglaries costs about £35 in parts. The one everyone seems to want costs ten times that and won't stop anyone who knows what they're doing.

I fit locks for a living across Luton and the LU postcodes. I see what gets attacked and what doesn't. And the gap between what sells well and what actually works is wide enough to drive a Transit through.

What a burglar actually does at your door

Forget the theatrical stuff. No drills, no lock picks, no Ocean's Eleven. The average residential break-in on a street in Bury Park or Stopsley takes about sixty seconds at the door. The method is almost always one of three things: snap the cylinder, kick the door, or push the hinge side.

That's it. Three attacks. And two of them have nothing to do with how expensive your lock is.

Kicking works because the door frame gives, not because the lock failed. Hinge-side attacks work because most doors, even ones with a decent deadbolt fitted, have two or three standard hinges with no reinforcement on the frame side. You can have a £400 Mul-T-Lock on the latch and still have a door that opens in two kicks because the hinge screws pull straight out of soft timber.

The upgrade nobody fits: hinge bolts

Hinge bolts are steel pins that sit in the hinge edge of a door and locate into a steel keep on the frame. When the door is closed, they lock the hinge side solid. A forced entry from the hinge side becomes almost impossible without serious tools and serious time.

Cost for a pair of decent hinge bolts: £12 to £18 in parts. Fitting time: about forty minutes on a standard door. Fitted price from a locksmith, typically £45 to £65 all in.

I genuinely cannot remember the last time I went to a break-in where hinge bolts were fitted and the hinge side had been attacked. Because it doesn't happen. The door becomes the hard target and the burglar moves on.

And yet when I ask homeowners in Leagrave or Wigmore whether they have them, almost nobody does. They've never heard of them. Their builder didn't mention them. Their door supplier definitely didn't mention them.

Hinge bolts are invisible when the door's closed. They don't look impressive on a brochure. There's no app. Nobody's going to post about them on a neighbourhood Facebook group. So they don't sell.

The decent cylinder: still the right call

If your door has a euro cylinder (that oval slot in the middle of the handle), cylinder snapping is a real attack method. I've written about the stats elsewhere, so I won't repeat them all here. The short version: a standard cylinder can be snapped with a cheap tool in under ten seconds.

A TS007 3-star cylinder, such as the Ultion, the Avocet ABS, or a Mul-T-Lock MT5+, is specifically tested to resist snapping, picking, and drilling. Fitted cost for a quality 3-star cylinder is usually £60 to £90 depending on the size and brand. That's it.

Pair that with your hinge bolts and a door that's got a decent multipoint locking system already (GU, Fuhr, Maco, or Winkhaus are the names to know), and you've addressed all three of the main attack vectors for somewhere between £80 and £150 fitted.

That combination is SS312 Diamond approved when specified correctly. It meets the standard insurers and police Crime Stoppers programmes actually care about. It doesn't have a battery that goes flat.

The expensive one everyone does

Smart locks. I'm not anti-smart lock. I've written a whole separate piece on the ones I'd actually fit at home. But here's what bothers me.

A popular smart lock with a keypad, an app, and a subscription for the cloud features retails at £200 to £400 for the lock itself. Add a video doorbell, a smart alarm panel integration, and a professional installation on a LU1 terrace or a Farley Hill semi, and you're at £700 to £1,100 without blinking.

And the question I'd want answered before spending that: has anyone fitted hinge bolts first? Does the cylinder meet TS007 3-star? Is the door frame reinforced at the keep?

Usually the answer to all three is no. The buyer has just spent a grand on a lock a burglar will snap or simply bypass by kicking the frame, because the fundamental weak points haven't been addressed.

Smart features are about convenience and remote access, which are genuinely useful for landlords covering Houghton Regis to Caddington, or an Airbnb host who doesn't want to drive to Slip End to let a cleaner in. That's legitimate. But convenience is not the same thing as security, and marketing has worked very hard to blur that line.

The obvious objection

Someone's going to say: you're a locksmith, you just want the cheap job. Fair challenge.

Hinge bolt fitting and a cylinder swap is probably two hours of work on a typical door. A smart lock install with frame work and integration is half a day minimum. I earn more from the expensive job. So I've got no financial incentive to talk you out of it.

The point is just that the order matters. Do the basics first. A smart lock on an unsecured door is like putting a top-of-the-range deadbolt on a cardboard box. Looks serious. Doesn't help.

The one fair caveat

If your door is a solid composite with a genuine multipoint system already, the frame is reinforced, the cylinder is already 3-star, and the hinges are internal (so the hinge side isn't accessible from outside at all), then yes, your marginal gain from a smart lock is legitimate. You've done the groundwork. Adding remote access and audit trails makes sense, especially for a rental property where you want to know who came and went.

But that door is rarer than you'd think. Most doors I look at in LU2, LU3, and LU4 have at least one of the three weak points still open. Usually two.

The short version

If you've got £150 and you want to make your home genuinely harder to break into, spend it on a TS007 3-star cylinder and a pair of hinge bolts. Get them fitted properly. Job done.

If you've already done that and you've got more budget and a real use case for remote access, then look at smart locks. But don't skip the first step because the second one has better packaging.
