Burglary Through Unlocked Door | Lock It, Luton

A quarter of all burglaries in England and Wales last year involved no forced entry. None. The door or window was just left unlocked, and somebody walked in.

That figure comes from the ONS police-recorded crime bulletin published on 23 July 2026, covering the year ending March 2026. There were 223,456 burglary offences recorded. Roughly 55,000 of them, call it one in four, required zero skill, no tools, no damaged lock. Just a handle that turned.

Bedfordshire Police have said publicly that opportunistic residential burglaries across the county are rising. They've urged residents to check doors and windows are properly secured. Good advice. But I think it needs to go further, and be more specific, before the clocks go back in October and the dark nights start doing the burglars' job for them.

The Habit Problem Is Bigger Than the Lock Problem

I had a job in Leagrave last autumn. A couple came back from a school run, forty-five minutes, mid-morning. Someone had walked in through the back door. No damage, no drama. The door hadn't been locked. Not even pulled shut properly.

That's not a lock failure. That's a habit failure. And it's far more common than people want to admit.

The honest truth is that most homes in Luton, Bury Park, Stopsley, Farley Hill, the LU1 to LU4 postcodes generally, have decent enough hardware on the door. A uPVC door with a multipoint lock is genuinely hard to kick in when it's properly engaged. The problem is the words when it's properly engaged.

Pulling a uPVC door shut engages the latch. It looks closed. It isn't locked. You have to lift the handle to throw the deadbolts and shootbolts into the frame, then turn the key to lock everything in place. A lot of people do the first bit and skip the second. That's a door a ten-year-old could open.

If you do nothing else after reading this, go and key-lock every external uPVC door you have. Tonight. Every time you leave. Every time you go to bed. That's the free security upgrade and it's worth more than most things you'd pay for.

When Someone Does Try to Force It

Habit gets you most of the way. But autumn brings longer dark periods and, consistently, a seasonal spike in break-in attempts. So let's say you lock your doors properly every time. You still want the lock itself to be worth something when someone has a go.

The weak point on most uPVC doors in this area is the euro cylinder, the barrel that your key goes into. Standard cylinders snap under pressure. It takes seconds. There are whole YouTube tutorials on it. The technique is called cylinder snapping, and once the cylinder breaks, the door opens regardless of how many bolts are thrown.

The fix is a TS007 3-star anti-snap cylinder. Brands I'd actually fit: Ultion, Avocet ABS, Mul-T-Lock MT5+. All carry the Sold Secure Diamond rating and are SS312 Diamond approved. An Ultion cylinder will cost you around £60 to £80 supplied and fitted. A Mul-T-Lock MT5+ is towards the top of that range. That's your real-world number for a LU postcode job.

If your cylinder is more than five or six years old and you don't know what it is, assume it's not snap-resistant. It almost certainly isn't.

Windows Are Part of This Too

The ONS data doesn't just flag doors. Unlocked windows, particularly small fanlights and bathroom windows left on the tilt, are a known entry route. Ground floor and first floor if there's a flat roof or a bin nearby.

Window restrictors and key-locking handles cost very little. On a property in Wigmore or Houghton Regis with a flat-roofed garage under a first-floor window, the risk is real. Worth twenty minutes checking them before October.

Don't Overcomplicate It

There's a temptation to jump straight to smart alarms, video doorbells, all of it. Fine, those things have value. But if the back door isn't key-locked, a camera just gives you good footage of the person walking in.

Lock the door. Key-lock the uPVC. Upgrade the cylinder if it isn't already rated. In that order. The habit costs nothing. The cylinder costs less than a night out.
